What history says about Robot?
The term robot originates from the Czech word robota meaning "Compulsory Labor". It was first used in the 1921 play Rossum's Universal Robots by the Czech novelist, Karel Capek. In 1941, Isaac Asimov who was Science fiction writer was the first used the word " robotics" to describe the technology of robots & predicated the rise
of a powerful robot industry.
The history of Nepal says, Robotics Club of IOE, Pulchowk Campus was established with the initiation of students in 2001. It is under the Department of Mechanical Engineering & is supported by Department of Computer & Electronic Engineering. Mr. Ramesh Chaudhary is the first person to built Robot in Nepal.
What are the main components of Robot?
Think a man without blood. Similarly Sensor is blood for Robot. Aluminum body is widely used in order to reduce the weight of the Robot. Chips and software programs are being widely used. The main supply is of 12V where as the internal circuit supply is only of 5V.
What are the different contest held in National and International level?
Students working in Robotics Club of Pulchowk Campus, IOE, has been representing Nepal in all editions of ABU Robocon ( International Robot Competition organized by Asian Broadcasting) since 2002. The club encourages and supports research in the field of robotics & automation. Beyond International contests, Robotics Club organizes annual national Robot Contest Robocup where all the private colleges are welcome to participate in the competition. Robotics club has successfully organized three national robot contests.
i) Robosoccer (2004) which was won by National College.
ii) Roboshooter (2005) which was won by Kathmandu Engineering College.
iii) Mission everest (2006) which was won again by Kathmandu Engineering College.
iv) RoboCup Nepal 2064 as a theme of "Bhoto Jatra"which & the Grand Prix Winner: Himalaya College of Engineering
Likewise, Nepal is successfully participating in International Contest too.
i) Sid-Scorpion-4 which was built to participate in the ABU Robocon 2002, Japan.
ii) Sid-Crab-5 which was built to participate in the ABU Robocon 2003, Thiland.
iii) Everest Conquerer – 6 which was participated in the TECHFEST Cliffhanger 2004, India & also in the ABU Robocon 2006, Malaysia.
iv) Everest Conquerer – 7 which was participated in ABU Robocon 2004,
South Korea.
v) Nepovivor, the Robot was participated in TECHFEST Survivor 2005, India.
vi) Arniko, this Robot was participated in ABU Robocon 2005, China.
vii) Sid –10 which was participant in ABU Robocon 2006, Malaysia.
viii) Baraha , the Robot was participant in ABU Robocon 2007, Hanoi, Vietnam.
So what are other different Robot made by Pulchowk Robotic Club?
Yes the club has produced over half a dozen of robots since its establishment.
Micro-Fan
It is a simple and economic fan which can be operated by various source like home supply, solar or battery because of low power consumption (2 watt) and light weight( approximate to 250 grams).
The mechanism of self rotation of the fan can serve air in the angle of 90 degrees. This looks rather artistic. It could be developed as a decorative item too. It can be prepared within an amount of Rs. 350/.
Elevator
This is our effort to manufacture to produce these types of things from our localities in our countries. Compromising some technical things, it seems best for the market of Nepal. Obviously, it costs quite less than that of imported elevators. And this can be also maintained regularly, as it is manufactured in our own country. Being simplicity in mechanism, even low skilled manpower can repair and do the maintenance easily.
Air-Cooler
This air cooler is driven by a single motor. It pumps water, maintains air direction and air speed. Various mechanisms have been used to keep the mechanical components small as possible. This can be a good example for teaching-learning process. The use of universal joint can be understood clearly. The gear box, gear speed reducing and increasing mechanism , the vane pumping system, moment conversion as circular to reciprocating, chain drive mechanism are some interesting things to watch.
Solar Car
This a three wheeler model solar car having a minimum possible radius of turn. This hybrid solar car is quite comfortable. It performs best in narrow streets and has a very easy handling. It's still in the manufacturing period.Without hybriding solar, this car is very much cheaper compared to the cost of a motorbike.
Does Robot will be my Wife?
Yes, if you are bachelor or divorced & can wait till 2050. Latest news flash out by Japan is that, they are working on beautiful Robot similar to a beautiful lady & almost have all features as real lady have. Most important than this news was, the same Robot can be your own child mother too. This shows advance we will be in our upcoming
Features.
Why our country lack behind in the field of Robot? It is true that Pulchowk Campus is only allow to take part in International Contest where as other Colleges are allow to take part in National Contest only. It shows that no matter how talent students are from other colleges have compulsory to miss out this golden opportunity in life. It may be one reasons that we are not able to built the Robot which cannot only compete to the International Contest but to have 100% probability to win contest. Also most of thecomponents like Microprocessor Chips, Sensors, board, etc are unavailable in the running market which is compulsory required for the projects. On top of this, because of the economic condition, the students are unable to carry out the project and have to bear all the cost and nobody support them even college & government. Another
drawback is because of political instability the students are not able to focused on to the project they are carrying on but have to face violence happening in the country. These are the major drawback which cause our country to lack behind in the Robotic field. It is positivesing which shows that there is "Robotic Club" almost in every Engineering College. But it is like students of these Robotic Club usually carry out there project to pass out the exams and to have a degree. These Robot is only for the purpose of demonstration but no at any more in commercial in use. More effective way to improve our country in the field of Robot is that there have to be "ROBOTIC CLUB" in National level, where all the students can bring there proposal and carry out there project smoothly. The government should have some extra fund to run this Club. If these type of changes is seen in our country then there is no doubt there will be at apex as our Everest is & we will be proud of it.
Thank you for Participating in Group Discussion program.
